Delivery Options & Course Structure

Face to Face Intensive

This intensive, fast-paced blended learning course comprises pre-workshop online learning, a practical and interactive two-day face-to-face workshop, online assessment as well as clinical placement which includes competency sign-off.

Pre-workshop activities

Completion of relevant online learning about which includes pre-reading and viewing of lectures online. This learning will take approximately 16 hours to complete.
 

Completion of a predisposing activity (RACGP requirement) prior to attendance.

Participants must have a theory and practical Implanon certificate before commencing the clinical placement component. Participants who do not hold this certification are required to enrol into the Contraceptive Implant (Implanon NXT) Insertion and Removal Training – Face to Face Assessment. Participants should enrol into the course instance of the face-to-face workshop date below. 

Face-to-face workshop

Participants are required to attend the two-day face-to-face workshop on the dates listed below, as it is essential for course progression. The workshop will feature interactive learning and discussion as well as a practical skill session focusing on key skills in reproductive and sexual health history taking, contraception, STIs, menopause and cervical screening.

A Contraceptive Implant (Implanon NXT) Insertion and Removal Training – Face to Face Assessment session will occur at the end of day 1 of the face-to-face workshop for participants who require certification. 

Post workshop activities

Completion of online learning (approximately 16 hours) and completion of an online exam and online role play assessment.

 

Clinical placement

Participants must complete approximately 32 hours of clinical placement which includes competency sign-off across our clinics under the guidance of our expert clinical instructors.

 

Assessment

To successfully complete the course, participants are expected to participate in all activities, including:

  • Completion of a predisposing activity and a reinforcing activity (RACGP requirement)
  • Attend the two-day face-to-face workshop
  • Completion of the online course work before being eligible to undertake the written exam and role play assessment
  • Completion of a written exam and role play assessment
  • Attend a clinical placement approximately 32 hours in duration

Demonstrate core competency using the competency record book

 

Recognition / Accreditation

Participants who successfully complete all course and assessment requirements will be issued with a Full Certificate.

The course is offered over a five-month period. It comprises self-paced online learning which includes pre-reading, online activities, compulsory interactive live case studies sessions and viewing pre-recorded lectures.

Upon completion you will be eligible to enrol in the clinical attachment course FPAA National Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health for Doctors – Supervised Clinical Attachment. 

This includes structured, supervised placement at Family Planning Australia clinics.

Assessment

To successfully complete the theory component of the FPAA National Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health for Doctors course, participants are expected to complete and participate in all activities, including:

  • Completion of a predisposing activity and a reinforcing activity (RACGP requirement)
  • Completion of 12 self-paced online learning topics which include pre-reading, online activities, case studies and viewing pre-recorded lectures
  • Attendance at five interactive live case study sessions – hosted on Zoom.
  • Completing 100% of the online course work including opening all documents, watching all videos, and completing all quizzes before being eligible to undertake the written exam and role play assessment
  • Completion of a written exam and role play assessment

Recognition Accreditation

Participants who successfully complete all course and assessment requirements will be issued with a Statement of Attainment.

Supervised Clinical Attachment

Family Planning Australia provides clinical skills workshop and supervised clinical placements for the FPAA National Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health.

The clinical placement requires participants to attend a clinical skills workshop day to demonstrate their understanding of essential practical skills prior to their placement.

Participants will then have an opportunity to meet core competencies across a 32-hour placement in Family Planning Australia clinics. Together with our experienced clinical instructors in Newington, Penrith, Newcastle, and Fairfield, course participants will gain hands-on experience with the appropriate range of reproductive and sexual health issues required to complete their clinical placements. This may include history taking, contraception, cervical screening, STI/BBV, pregnancy options, and common andrology.

This placement is only available to participants who have completed the FPAA National Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health for Doctors – Theory course within the last 12 months. Participants are required to hold a theory and practical Implanon certificate to register.

Registration

Participants who have recently completed the theory component will be offered a clinical placement booking composed of 32 hours of face-to-face clinical supervision and competency sign-off.

Clinical Skills Workshop

Before commencing their clinical placement, participants must attend a Clinical Skills Workshop Day. This workshop focusses on key skills in history taking, cervical screening, common andrology and understanding of contraceptives. Clinicians must book in their own clinical placement days before attending the workshop, where they must accumulate a total of 32 hours.

Clinical Placement

Participants must complete the clinical placement within 3 months of attending the workshop. During this placement, participants must demonstrate competency in core skills. Alternate arrangements will be made with the Clinical Education Team if participants are unable to demonstrate competency.

Eligibility/Prerequisite

Doctors will need to:

  • Hold current unconditional registration with AHPRA
  • Have 12 months post-registration experience

Hold or obtain a theory and practical Implanon certificate before commencing clinical placement
