IUD Insertion Training

This blended course is designed to equip doctors and eligible nurses and midwives who wish to offer IUD insertion in their clinical practice with the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to provide safe insertion of IUDs.

Are you a Medical Practitioner, Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurse or Midwife interested in becoming an IUD inserter within your own clinical setting? This course blends online learning, face-to-face workshop and clinical placement to equip you with the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to provide safe insertion of IUDs to clients.

Who should attend

Doctors, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and midwives who wish to offer IUD insertion in their clinical practice.

Course structure

It is essential participants complete the required activities before attending the workshop to gain critical knowledge and ensure full participation during the course.

Participants have access to the online learning 2 weeks before the workshop.

Module 1

Pre-workshop activities

  • Completion of online learning which takes approximately 5 hours.
  • Completion of a predisposing activity (RACGP requirement) prior to attendance.

Face-to-Face Workshop

  • 3-hour workshop, completion of a reinforcing activity (RACGP requirement).

Module 2

Clinical placement (supervised clinical attachment) up to 4 clinical sessions (4 hours per clinic, 16 hours approximately). Participants must complete the clinical placement within 3 months of attending the workshop.

Participants are expected to travel to any Family Planning Australia clinic to fulfil their course requirements.

Eligibility/prerequisite

To be eligible for an AUSLARC scholarship, applicants will be asked to declare their eligibility against the criteria below.  Scholarships are available for GPs, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses and Midwives with current AHPRA registration.  In addition, applicants must:

  • have adequate indemnity to cover LARC provision
  • be working within a scope of practice that includes or intends to include the provision of contraceptive services, including LARC, such as:
    • General Practice
    • Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS)
    • Community health services
    • Rural outreach health services
    • Sexual and reproductive health clinics
  • demonstrate a commitment to incorporating LARC provision into routine clinical practice and improving access to contraception for their patient population.
  • be eligible for the chosen training program (as per individual provider’s prerequisites)
  • not previously received a similar LARC training scholarship
  • demonstrate your readiness to start providing IUDs.

It is preferred applicants have:

  • unconditional registration with the Medical Board of Australia or the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
  • considerable experience in women’s health and gynaecology and have well-developed bimanual pelvic examination skills
  • extensive experience in contraceptive counselling
  • undertaken a Family Planning Australia Certificate of Reproductive and Sexual Health – for Doctors or Nurses or equivalent

Registered Nurses must demonstrate that they have adequate clinical support by a medical practitioner in their own practice.

Assessment

The assessment requirements include satisfactory completion of online learning, workshop attendance and successful completion of IUD clinical competencies.

Recognition/accreditation

Participants who complete all assessment requirements for both Modules 1 and 2 will be issued with a Statement of Attainment.

This education is a CPD Accredited Activity under the RACGP CPD Program.  The activity ID is 403379.

This module is equivalent to 24 hours to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requirements for CPD.
