Course Details
This course for doctors, nurses and midwives, it has been designed to enhance knowledge, technique, and confidence in cervical screening, with a strong focus on recent updates to self-collection. This blended learning course comprises both online learning and comprehensive skills practise, led by Family Planning Australia experienced clinical facilitators.
Content includes:
- Updates on the National Cervical Screening Guidelines, with a focus on self-collection
- Human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer
- Communication and history taking skills
- Taking samples
- Case studies
- Practise cervical screening on pelvic models
Who should attend
Doctors, nurses and midwives who are required to provide cervical screening and want an update on self-collection.
Course Structure
It is essential participants complete 100% of the required online learning before attending the face-to-face workshop to gain critical knowledge and ensure full participation during the course.

The course covers theory through online learning, and practise through a 2-hour practical workshop which includes a case studies activity as well as practising cervical screening on pelvic models led by Family Planning Australia clinicians.
Pre-workshop activities
- Completion of online learning which includes watching pre-recorded videos and reviewing resources
- The online learning will take approximately 3 hours to complete
Face-to-face workshop
- The opportunity for discussion with a focus on changes to self-collection
- Case studies activity
- Practise cervical screening on pelvic models
- This learning will take 2 hours to complete
Eligibility/Prerequisite
Current registration with the Medical Board of Australia or Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

Experience in cervical screening, genital examination and speculum insertion are desirable but not essential.
Course cost
$275
Recognition/Accreditation
Participants, who complete all the online learning and attend the workshop will be issued with a Statement of Completion.
This course is equivalent to 5 hours to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requirements for CPD.
