Family Planning Australia, in partnership with NSW Health, is developing a new blended learning course to support pharmacists in developing the knowledge, skills and confidence to provide evidence-based contraceptive care.
This course is being designed to build pharmacists’ confidence in providing evidence-based contraceptive care, strengthen clinical decision-making and consultation skills, support the application of current Australian clinical guidelines in practice, develop skills through authentic pharmacist-focused scenarios and prepare them to prescribe within their professional scope of practice.
We are aiming to launch the course in October 2026.

Who should attend
This course is being developed for registered pharmacists who wish to expand their clinical knowledge and prepare for contraceptive prescribing within their approved scope of practice.
The proposed scope of learning includes initiating hormonal contraception for clients aged 18–39 years.
Course structure
The course will combine flexible online learning with practical assessment and supervised clinical experience.
Participants will complete a range of learning activities including:
- Self-paced online learning
- Interactive workshops
- Role play assessment
- Written examination
- Supervised clinical placement
